Saniona and Cadent Therapeutics collaborate on developing activators of calcium-activated small conductance potassium channels (SK channels) for treatment of the neurological movement disorders, essential tremors and ataxia. Essential tremors are among the most common neurological disorders causing hand-shivering, whereas ataxia is a generic term for a group of orphan diseases of both spontaneous and hereditary origin characterized by severe coordination problems. Both conditions are caused by dysfunction or degeneration of the cerebellum – the brain’s coordination center. Ataxia patients develop difficulties with walking, speaking, and performing daily activities, thus severely affecting both quality and duration of life. The SK-activator program represents the first targeted treatment opportunity to these grossly under-served patient populations. The program is in preclinical development.
